The Anti-Office Space

Can I make money working for Postmates

Becoming an independent contractor for Postmates

I am not the work in an office type of girl, and don't particularly enjoy serving tables. I’m always looking for new ways to get my hustle on. Postmates is a courier company with an easy to use app for any android or iPhone user. The question is, how much money can you actually make working as an independent contractor for Postmates and what does it take?

On average I have been making about $15 - $18 an hour in Orange County. Although on Postmates Courier Facebook (a closed group) people in LA seem to be doing a little better and claim about $20 - $25 an hour. The key is to work during blitz pricing hours. During these hours your commission for each job is a higher payout. You also want to stack your jobs appropriately. This is important as you want to drive as little miles as possible to earn the most money. You are able to stack 2 jobs up at a time. You have to be careful of how you stack your jobs because the app doesn't seem to be very good with proximity and will try to send you 20 mins away from your next drop-off for the next pick-up and you will only have 57 mins to make the whole delivery.

Tip: Pay close attention to the next job location. Look at the map closely, I have accepted jobs on “Main st.” thinking it was close to me, later realizing there is a “Main st.” in just about every city and I was being sent 20 away to a neighboring city, just far enough to make me late on a job.

If I work an 8 hour day it will make me about $120 before expenses, give or take a few bucks. This does not include gas or maintenance for your vehicle. You also have to feel out the area you are working (OC, LA, SF, SD, NY) get familiar with the area so you know the right hours to login to receive as many jobs as possible.

Tip: This is a business you are starting as an independent contractor. You're not working for Postmates. You are a contractor so don't forget to save all your maintenance gas receipts, cell phone bills and keep your milage. You will need this information when doing your taxes.

What I think of Postmates

I think Postdates is great as a part time gig. I like to use Postmates while I’m working for Lyft. I can have both apps running and if Lyft is slow I usually get a couple deliveries to fill my time while I wait for busier hours for Lyft. I’ll be posting an article soon with tips and tricks to working more then one app at a time.

Safety first when you are driving. Here are some products that can help you stay safe on the road while driving.

This mount is great because it's big enough to hold my iPhone 6 plus. The suction works well for me, so far it holds strong. I personally don't like the window mounts because they tend to block my vision while driving so this mount fits very nicely on my dash and lets me keep full vision of the road while driving my Mazda3.

Don't forget to keep your phone charged up. The Postmates app will shut down when you reach 10% battery level.
